MOT Bay Layout And Dimensions

Essential requirements and specifications for MOT testing bay dimensions and premises suitability

DVSA Compliant: Ensure your premises meet official VOSA/DVSA requirements for MOT testing

MOT Bay Layout and Dimensions

It is fundamental that you make sure your premises are suitable and testing bay sizes are correct for the vehicle classes you'll be testing. Premises, test bays and equipment will be considered suitable if they meet the requirements by the DVSA.

MOT test bays and layout dimensions are measured from the inside wall to the inside wall on each side of the bay. The height of the bay is measured from the floor to the ceiling or the lowest obstruction (such as lights or beams).

Important Measurement Guidelines

All measurements should be taken from inside wall to inside wall, with height from floor to ceiling or lowest obstruction.

Additional Bay Requirements

Lighting Standards

Adequate lighting must be provided throughout the bay to allow proper inspection of all vehicle components. Minimum illumination levels apply.

Floor Surface

The floor must be level, clean, and free from oil contamination. A suitable surface is essential for accurate testing and safety.

Equipment Space

Sufficient space must be available for all required testing equipment, including brake testers, headlamp aim checkers, and emission testing equipment.

Access and Ventilation

Adequate ventilation systems must be in place to remove exhaust fumes. Bay doors must be of suitable size for vehicle entry and exit.

Inspection Pit or Lift

An inspection pit or vehicle lift is required to examine the underside of vehicles. This must meet specific safety standards.

Key Points to Remember

  • Measure accurately: All dimensions must be measured from inside wall to inside wall
  • Height clearance: Consider ceiling height and any overhead obstructions like lighting or beams
  • Class specific: Different vehicle classes require different minimum dimensions
  • Equipment space: Allow additional space beyond minimums for testing equipment
  • DVSA approval: Your premises must be inspected and approved by DVSA before testing can commence
